Gir Forest National Park is a wildlife sanctuary in Gujarat, western India. It was established to protect Asiatic lions, who frequent the fenced-off Devalia Safari Park, along with leopards and antelopes. Gir National Park is the only place in the world outside Africa where a lion can be seen in its natural habitat. The sanctuary is internationally acclaimed for successfully saving this precious species from the brink of extinction.
It was declared as a sanctuary in 1965. Taking a safari through the thick, undisturbed forests is a joy – even without the added excitement of spotting lions, other wildlife and myriad bird species. Mammals
The entire forest area of the Gir National Park is dry and deciduous which provides best habitat for Asiatic Lions comprise 10% of the total area of the park. As per the new statics of 2015, the entire Saurashtra Region is inhabited by 523 Lions and more than 300 Leopards. Asiatic Lions, Indian Cobras, hyenas and Indian leopards form the prime attractions of the park.

Reptiles
There are roughly 37 new species of reptiles, ranging from frogs to snakes and scorpions and bees that researchers have discovered in the area. Gir National Park has a wide variety of reptiles including monitor lizard, marsh crocodile, hare tortoise and many snake species including Indian Cobras, python, common ratsnake, keelbacks, Common Indian Krait, Russell’s viper and saw-scaled viper.

Birds
These drinking holes also attract about 300 different kinds of resident birds. The national park also functions as a bird reserve, a title that was declared by the Bird Conservative Network. Bird watchers from across the world come over to the forest to spot species like the greenish yellow-footed pigeons, Griffon Eurasian vulture, hawk, eagle, Indian Pitta, Oriole to name a few.

Kamleshwar Dam

Darbar Hall Museum
Built in a beautiful old palace of Junagarh, the Darbar Hall Museum is amongst the finest museums in Gujarat as it preserves the treasures of the Junagarh rulers. The splendid repository includes the 19th-century possession of the Nawabs that were found here years ago. This museum is truly exquisite, and an absolute must visit when in the area. Darbar Hall Museum houses different galleries exhibiting around 2900 artefacts- picture gallery, palanquin room, textile and costumes gallery, weapons gallery, etc.

Girnar Mountain
This sacred mountain also known as Revatak Parvata, rising dramatically from the plains, is covered with Jain and Hindu temples. Hence it is famous for being an important pilgrimage site for both Hindus and Jains. Hence Girnar is also known as Girinagar, the city on the hills. Is considered older than the Himalayas, Girnar, the mountain and its range are considered sacred. Winters are the best time to visit Girnar Parvat, as the temperatures are low and you do not feel fatigued while trekking. The mountain has a height of 3666 feet. It is also a major destination for trekkers as the place gives an experience of adrenaline rush.

Kankai Mata shrine
In the middle of the sanctuary, about 25 km from Sasan Gir, lies the Kankai Mata shrine. The temple is dedicated to Shri Kankeshwari Mataji or Shri Kankai Mataji. A devotee who wants to spend the night here must obtain a special permit from forest department personnel. The Gir Park Forest Department only allows 50 devotees to remain the night at a time. The Kankai Mata temple lies inside the Gir National Park which is perfect for wildlife wanderlust. Tourists can also experience lion thunder within the temple.

Jamjir Waterfall
This is a beautiful waterfall situated in the western part of Gujarat, India near Jamwada Village which falls in Gir Somnath District. Jamvala is very famous for only three things peda, kesar mango and jamjir waterfall. Height of this waterfall is around 30 to 40 feet. Jhamjir waterfalls is a part of Junagadh district and is located at a distance of 23 kilometres from the world famous Gir Wildlife Sanctuary and 37 kilometres from Kodinar. As this a natural waterfall, it flows all round the year, but still the best time to visit is July to September. As it is the monsoon season the flow is really high.

Devalia Safari Park

At a distance of 11 km from Gir National Park, Devalia Safari Park is a safari zone situated at Devalia. Gir Interpretation Zone is basically a fenced- off compound that acts as the home to good cross-section of Gir wildlife. Here, the chances of spotting lions are pretty good and tourists can get around 35- 40 minutes to look for wildlife from a bus. You may also see foxes, mongoose and blackbuck – the latter being lion fodder. These safaris ensure an excellent sighting and unique wilderness experience.
